The Rail Yard was built in 1868 by C.C Hillenbrand. The Hillenbrand family manufactured and sold assorted leather products from 1868-1895. In 1895 the building was sold nd reopened as a trackside tavern. The Rail Yard, Formely the Black Horse Tavern was used as a metting place for a great number of wealthy citizens using the FJ&G (Fonda, Johnstown & Gloversville) Railroad. Gloversville once contained almost 400 glove manufacturers and produced aproximately 95% of all American-mad gloves. A century later and the tavern and the busy railroad station are gone but across the street, the FJG boxcar and monument sits on the site of the old offices and passenger depot.
In 1989, Blanchard purchased The Railyard and began its restoration to bring the railroad atmosphere back to Gloversville. In 1991, he reopened the restaurant and renovated to its former splendor. Don continued to expand his "trackside" business and built Choo Choo's, an ice shop and The Caboose, a local sports bar. He later partnered with sister and brother-in-law, Lori and Tim White. Don described this as the best decision he ever made for his downtown business. In 2006, Capital District's Business Review 40 under Fourty program identified Don Blanchard as on of the upstate New York's most-promising young members of the business community.
Today the Railyard is a landmark in Gloversville. People travel to the area from around the world to this small Adirondack town for it's leather products that can only be found here. It has been 20 years and the Railyard has a reputation for its fine dining and exceptional service.
